With Independence Day coming up, and upon seeing this Facebook post, I wrote a brief arrangement (filed under the “Intermediate” folder) based on the Presidential Anthem:

This helps students master:

  • control of simultaneous, independent staccato versus non-staccato across the hands
  • crisp, dotted eighth-sixteenth rhythms
  • Jumps in the left hand

This may also be used as a rapid assessor to gauge all new pupils’ understanding of music, as teachers can ask about the key, repeats, and tenuto marks.
