It should be perceptible that my lyricism has taken a nasty dive due to a lack of steady piano practice (an average of about 1-2 hours total per week), but through my one God alone was I able to nail all of the notes in a self-recording of this extremely difficult yet divinely satisfying work. Liszt and his pupils always referred to it as simply his Concert Etude in A-flat major, but the name “Il Lamento” was probably tacked on by publishers in an attempt to increase its popularity. I can’t think of a better name.

  1. My God . . . the horrendous passage of 7:47 – 8:25 – the climax and the most glorious version of the main theme (Il Lamento) – is flawless.

I play much Liszt myself. Il Lamento, together with Ricordanza, are two of my favourite items in my repertoire. I personally think that Il Lamento has long been underplayed and underrated. It is the most profound among the Trois Etudes de Concert.

    Well done, Josh!
