It should be perceptible that my lyricism has taken a nasty dive due to a lack of steady piano practice (an average of about 1-2 hours total per week), but through my one God alone was I able to nail all of the notes in a self-recording of this extremely difficult yet divinely satisfying work. Liszt and his pupils always referred to it as simply his Concert Etude in A-flat major, but the name “Il Lamento” was probably tacked on by publishers in an attempt to increase its popularity. I can’t think of a better name.
