I had written this first movement a year and a half ago, on September 10-11, 2011, for a former student of mine who was very young and could not reach octaves. It was far too barbaric for her, but I hadn’t realized it at the time, as I was completely absorbed into ensuring myself that I produced a movement in perfect standing with sonata-allegro form.

As such, I ended up choosing motives and textures that are not easily sight-readable, to say the least. Students will face the following pedal-less challenges:
► Fast jumps
► Offbeat rhythms
► Hand-crossing
► Two voices in one hand
► Dramatic dynamics
► Dynamic dramatics
► And more!
